Role of Sindh in the Creation of Pakistan
Not many books and papers focus on Sindh’s contribution to the creation of the new state of Pakistan in 1947. This conversation is with Pakistan’s three top historians, intellectuals, politicians, and an academician. Rasool Bux Palijo, author of several books, is a prominent intellectual and founder of Awami Tahreek. Dr. Hamida Khuhro, a research scholar, a historian of Sindh and daughter of Sindh’s first Chief Minister Ayoub Khuhro, and Dr. Jaffer Ahmad, author of several books, former director of Pakistan Area Study Center at the University of Karachi. Dr. Ahmad currently heads the Irteqa Institute of Social Sciences in Karachi.
This dialogue sheds light on the main characters from Sindh in the political movement before the partition in 1947. It also discusses the separation of Sindh from the Bombay Presidency. After invading Sindh in 1842-43, the British Empire merged Sindh, an independent State and country, into Bombay Province. After the decades-long struggle, Sindh regained its status and became a province of the British Empire in 1937.

Rasheed Hijab Rajpar was the first Sindhi woman to become a Fulbright Scholar. She held leadership roles in women’s colleges across Sindh province, serving as principal at Sukkur College, Nuzrat College in Hyderabad, and Women’s College in Karachi, as well as Director of Colleges. Her final position was Chairperson of the Hyderabad Board. Alongside her contributions to education, she was a renowned story writer and passionate about literature.
